Yes You CAN!

You can Make a Difference with just a small amount of time!

Support the Hayward Community Action Network (CAN) and South Hayward Parish with a daily click of your mouse. Vote for our Homeless Angels project at www.refresheverything.com/homelessangels

What’s It All About?

We have been approved to compete in this month’s Pepsi Refresh Project. In order to win $5,000 for our Homeless Angels Project, we need everyone to vote for our project, EVERY DAY.

When asked to identify solutions to homelessness, the primary recommendation of those on the street was “Jobs.” Based on the interests and abilities of those involved in CAN, we launched four job training/creation opportunities earlier this year: Computer skills training, Urban Farming, Sewing and alterations classes, and Beading, jewelry, and art making. All opportunities are lead by community volunteers, including some individuals who are homeless and/or low income, who share their expertise with their peers.

The beading and jewelry component came out of a simple request during a CAN program. “Teach me?”

Not only was the answer, “Yes”, but the response from the community and donors has been invigorating. On any Tuesday or Wednesday, (regular Hayward CAN program hours) two to ten CAN members sit around the office’s kitchen table making jewelry, key chains, bookmarks, and more. Those with more experience teach, those with ideas, share them, and those in need, find support. We have found that the opportunity to develop marketing plans, implement plans and ideas, and even, work through the frustrations of the creative process are inspiring people to overcome their personal obstacles to self-sufficiency. “I can’t remember the last time I worked an 8 hour day,” said one artist. “Maybe things can be different for me.”

“This program gives me a reason to get up in the morning,” said another. “It gives me hope!”

Ready to join in?

Hayward CAN Fundraiser

Event Flier

On Tuesday, April 26th, South Hayward Parish’s CAN program will partner with the McDonald’s at Jackson and Watkins to raise funds for the multiple services CAN provides to end homelessness in Hayward.

From 4-7pm 20% of all sales at McDonald’s will benefit the CAN program. Further, handcrafts (greeting cards, hand sewn bags, and jewelry) all created by Hayward CAN artists will be available for sale. Attendees can also purchase drawing tickets to win a stereo system, custom jewelry, or McDonald’s gift certificate.

Proceeds will improve computer access for housing and jobs applications and family communications as well as case management and vocational training. Additionally, handcraft sales revenue is shared between the artists and the program to promote self-sufficiency, purchase additional supplies, and to grow the program.

For more details about Hayward CAN’s efforts to end homelessness in Hayward, please contact, the Program’s Director, Sara Lamnin, (510) 432-7703 or haywardcan@gmail.com

See you at McDonald’s from 4-7pm on Tuesday, April 26th!

A Pocket Full of Angels

Angel Photo

Homeless Angel

Today I left the CAN office with a pocket full of angels.
Literally.
These small beaded charms are part of our efforts to eliminate obstacles to self-sufficiency for individuals who are homeless in Hayward. Made by women and men living on the street, these angels honor one of our members who lost his life attempting to help his peers.

Jose and his  colleague, Joe, founded the “Homeless Angels” peer support effort in 2008. After Jose’s death in 2010 and in response to the community’s demand for more jobs, the Hayward Community Action Network (CAN) launched three vocational training efforts, including a beading class. In addition to jewelry making techniques, the class helps people to practice organizational skills, follow through, and personal responsibility – techniques imperative for successful transition to stability and self-sufficiency.

The Hayward Community Action Network was founded in 2007 to bring individuals who

are homeless or at risk for homelessness together with members of the faith, business, and social and government service communities to develop sustainable solutions to end homelessness in Hayward. The Homeless Angel charms are available for sale ($5 each suggested donation). A portion of the proceeds are given to the CAN members who make the charms, with the balance of the funds reinvested directly into the training program.

For more information, please contact the Program Director, Sara Lamnin, haywardcan@gmail.com  or (510) 432-7703.
